Before you start
From: Google Chrome with nothing installed. To: Claude reading and acting on a page beside you. Time: about 15 minutes.
Requirements
- Google Chrome on a desktop computer (macOS, Windows or Linux).
- A paid Claude plan — the Pro plan you set up in the Claude Code lab.
- The same Gmail address you used for that plan.
Part 1 — Install the extension
Open the Chrome Web Store page for the extension. It is published by Anthropic and is simply called Claude.
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/claude/fcoeoabgfenejglbffodgkkbkcdhcgfn- Click Add to Chrome.
- Chrome asks what the extension may do → click Add extension.
- Wait a few seconds for the download to finish.
Part 2 — Sign in and pin
- Click the puzzle-piece icon → click Claude.
- Sign in with the same Gmail address as your Pro plan. A different account has no paid plan, and the extension will not work.
- In the same puzzle menu, click the thumbtack next to Claude to pin it.
Part 3 — Open the side panel
- Click the Claude icon in the toolbar.
- A side panel opens at the edge of the window. It stays open as you move from page to page, so you can keep working while Claude reads along.
- Grant the permissions it asks for. Claude needs access to the site you are on before it can read or click anything there.
- Type
helloin the panel and press Enter.
Part 4 — First prompt
Open the course book in the same tab, so Claude has a real page to read.
https://books.karbab.net/ai-cybersec/Prompt 1 — read the page
Read this page and list the chapters it links to, one line each.اقرأ هذه الصفحة واذكر الفصول التي ترتبط بها، سطراً واحداً لكل فصل.
Claude reads the page you are looking at, not a copy of it from somewhere else. The panel shows you each thing it does as it does it.
Prompt 2 — let it use the browser
Open Wikipedia in a new tab and tell me the first sentence of the article about phishing.افتح Wikipedia في تبويب جديد وأخبرني بالجملة الأولى من المقالة عن phishing.
This time Claude clicks and types in the browser itself while you watch. It may stop and ask you to approve a step before it continues — read what it is asking for, then approve or refuse.
Part 5 — Permissions and safety
Two modes
- Automatically approve (the default): Claude acts on the page on its own, inside built-in guardrails.
- Permissions: Claude asks before it acts, and you approve site by site.
- In either mode Claude pauses and asks you first before a purchase or another action that cannot be undone.
Where not to use it
- Never on online banking, health records, or any page where you type a password.
- A web page can hide instructions aimed at Claude rather than at you — this is prompt injection. Claude reads whatever is on the page, hidden text included.
- Watch the panel while it works. If it does something you did not ask for, stop it and close the panel.
